Season 4

This season was about refinement using everything i have learnt so far and the knowledge i have gained, can i create works, that uses minimal elements within the confines of the style and create work that communicates more effectively. This season was hard because of how technical everything got. at this point im looking at artist like Takashi Murakami, Kaws, and realising how much of there own culture they use in there work. Artist such as Murakami developed a movement called Super-flat which is a style of art i have not fully grasped the concept of, but it felt like only Japanese people could do original Super-flat style,Looking at Murakami's work there was always a sense of him being Japanese. a strong culture like that has many elements that you can use to make that distinct. there visual style is there own. i wanted to know if there was an equivalent in Jamaican terms.I quickly realised we perpetuate the culture we learned as slaves and didn't develop our own culture. much tradition and care was left out of the equation of our development

Gathering Material

Material or fabric is the term I have been using to explain, looking for visual or written information to be studied for inspiration or reference for works of deeper meaning. Material is the part of the information that can be reinterpreted to provide a deeper insight of what you're trying to say.as a Jamaican i went in search of how other artists interpreted the island of Jamaica and our culture in there art. i found a diverse amount of work from video installations, sculptures, to many many many paintings, but all could be categorised by the themes below.
Themes
- Old traditional depictions (black women with turbans, tribe like or country living, people in the market)
- Sexually expressive (acts of sex, or. nudity)
- Vegetation (landscapes of plants, trees, etc)
- finding beauty in the reality of poor living.
But still, I distilled these findings and applied them to the subject matter in season 4, to talk about society, identity, and overall want to understand who we are (who i am). i reimagined the work to be more culturally significant to myself
i feel like our culture hasn't been enough for me as a person.
